Sitting in Silence:

When God Protects You in the Storm

Sometimes I pray and hear nothing.
Not because God isn’t listening, but because He’s already answered in a way I haven’t yet recognized.

A gentle rain falls over a quiet resort landscape as seen from a covered balcony, symbolizing peace and protection in the middle of a storm.

Lately, I’ve been praying for wisdom, for strength, and for a little clarity in the middle of situations that feel too tangled for my own logic. The response has been quiet, not silent in an empty way, but silent in a sacred way.

Kind of like the moment I found myself sitting under the edge of a roof while rain poured only a few feet away. I was completely dry, so close to the storm I could feel the mist, yet completely covered by something stronger than my own hands.

That’s exactly how it feels when God holds us in His silence.

Protected but Not Removed

In my life, one would think seclusion would be next to impossible.
A full house, a noisy crew, constant needs, and yet, somehow, God meets me in the middle of it all.

I’ve learned that silence doesn’t always mean stillness. Sometimes, it’s right in the middle of chaos, laundry spinning, coffee brewing, someone calling “Mom!” for the fifth time, that I sense Him whisper, “You’re covered.”

He doesn’t remove me from the storm; He covers me in it.
And honestly, that’s where my faith grows best.

When Silence Feels Confusing

There have been days I’ve cried out for direction and heard nothing but the sound of my own thoughts echoing back. I’ve questioned whether I missed His voice or disappointed Him somehow.

But then He reminds me, the same way He reminded Elijah, that His voice isn’t in the wind, or the earthquake, or the fire. It’s in the gentle whisper.

And sometimes, that whisper comes wrapped in stillness.

It’s easy to panic when life goes quiet. But silence isn’t absence.
It’s often God saying, “Stay close. I’m still working.”

Peace Under the Eaves

That rainy-day picture keeps replaying in my mind.
Sitting just a few feet from chaos, completely dry, I realized the peace wasn’t because the storm stopped. It was because I stopped trying to step out from under His protection.

God’s peace doesn’t always remove the storm.
Sometimes, it simply reminds you where to sit.

When I choose to stay under His covering, even when I don’t understand, even when nothing feels easy, I find comfort in the knowing.

The knowing that He’s near.
The knowing that He’s working.
The knowing that silence is still sacred.

Learning to Listen Differently

n this season, I’m learning that the most powerful prayers aren’t always the loudest ones.
Sometimes they sound like,

“Here I am, Lord. I’m listening.”

And in return, His peace whispers back,

“Here I am too. Stay with Me.”

That’s the kind of silence I want to live in, not an absence of sound, but the presence of peace.

So, if you find yourself in a season where heaven feels quiet, don’t run from it. Sit in it. Listen.
The silence might just be the sound of God’s protection.

Reflection

Take a few moments today to notice where God has covered you, the unseen moments of grace, the calm under your own roof’s “eaves.”
The silence might not mean He’s far away.
It might mean He’s closer than ever.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” – Psalm 46:10
